First used for retirement in the Roman Empire, annuities are often misunderstood and not favored by some. They were designed for retirement, and their purpose is to pay an annual income that you cannot outlive. Since the Romans, annuities have been used by many successful people such as Albert Einstein, Walt Disney, J.C. Penney, the Rockefeller Family, Ronald Reagan, Ben Bernanke and more. There are different types of annuities such as fixed, indexed and variable. Some are immediate and others are deferred. They may be funded with a single premium or a periodic premium. Some have special features called income riders. Like life insurance, they can provide funding for long term care and a death benefit. Make sure that they are suitable for your needs.
